One of Qatar's largest cities, Al Khor City is a coastal district located about 60 kilometres north of the capital Doha. Al Khor City is the capital city of the Al Khor municipality. The name translates to "creek" in Arabic. It was named such due to the original settlement being built on a creek. The city is close to Qatar's northern oil and natural gas fields and so naturally many of the residents there are employees of these industries. The area is also home to the Ras Laffan Industrial City. The expansion of the industrial city has bought about a rapid expansion of services and facilities for the residents.
The city is home to the Al-Khor SC Stadium and the magnificent "Al Bayt Stadium" is due to be completed for the FIFA 2022 World Cup. Al Khor's, Al Bayt Stadium is set to host one of the semi-final matches of the tournament. Other facilities to mention are the Al Khor General Hospital which is the is the first multi-speciality healthcare facility situated outside of the capital Doha. Al Khor International School is the main school in Al Khor with 4000 students from families employed by RasGas and QatarGas in attendance.
Al Khor is famous for many attractions. The Al Sultan beach hotel resort, Al Khor Mall and one of the largest parks in Qatar, Al Khor Park, with an area of 240,000m2. Al Khor also is an area that offers affordable family housing for its residents and apartments and villas for rent are found to be considerably cheaper than Doha and its neighbouring municipalities.
